Sudden Weather Shift: Rain in the North, Palma Stays Dry — A Small Breather
A small low moved over north Mallorca during the night, bringing wet asphalt, refilled gullies and relief for farmers. Palma and the south remained largely spared — a sign that late summer can finally breathe easier.
Surprising Night in the North: Rain, Fresh Air and a Bit of Order
It was one of those quiet island anecdotes: while many people in Palma could put their umbrellas away again in the morning, Rainy Day in Palma: Mild, Wet, and Surprisingly Beautiful. In the north you could hear the patter of light showers on roofs and the rush of fresh streams that briefly carried more water. Around 03:00 the wind turned to the northeast and pushed away the oppressive, almost tropical air of previous days. Suddenly the night smelled of salt and pine instead of heat.
Who got rain — who didn't?
North coast and northeast: Alcúdia, Artà and the coastal towns reported wet roads, dark patches on the asphalt and individual, heavy showers that soon subsided. For farmers and gardeners this was a welcome help: olive and almond trees showed their gratitude, and dust‑suppressing water refilled rills that had been dry for weeks, as noted in Rain break: Mallorca breathes — late summer returns.
Palma, south and west: Here it stayed mostly dry. A few fine drops mixed with fine Sahara sand and left matte marks on car bodies and café tables. Flights at the airport operated normally; takeoff and landing procedures were unaffected — so hardly an issue for travelers. Still, the air felt noticeably lighter and the oppressive humidity had vanished.
Temperatures, wind and forecast
The heat of the previous days had locally reached around 34 °C — especially in Llucmajor and some inland spots. On Friday, however, typical late‑summer weather returned: daytime highs around 30 °C, nights dropping below 20 °C in many places. The national weather service expects this milder phase to persist into the first days of September; a new, pronounced heat wave is not in sight for the time being, as described in Mild interlude — then rain: Atlantic low brings fresh air to Mallorca. For the coming Monday, the local chance of rain rises to about 30%.
The wind will remain mostly light to moderate with changing directions in the next few days. Coastal sections may have isolated stronger gusts — if you stroll along the Passeig Mallorca in the evening now, you'll feel the change clearly: no more sweating, just a fresh breeze and the distant sound of the surf.
Everyday scenes: cafés, taxi drivers and Tramuntana hikers
On Friday morning the promenade was surprisingly more relaxed. Fewer towels, more conversations. The small cafés along Avinguda de Gabriel Roca filled with neighbors praising the more pleasant night. A taxi driver who shuttles between the port and the old town smiled and briefly said: “Finally we can breathe again.”
For day‑trippers the situation is practical: the Serra de Tramuntana now shows itself on its pleasant side — paths are no longer dusty‑hot, and hikes are enjoyable again as long as you can live with a changeable sky. Boat trips are also possible; captains warn, however, to check the weather once more before setting off — see Clouds Gather: Rainy Weather Coming to Mallorca — Pack an Umbrella.
Small tips for daily life
Evening wear: After sunset a light jacket or scarf is recommended. The temperature drops noticeably, especially near the coast.
Balcony plants: If you have plants on the terrace: don’t water them yet. The nighttime showers have given many soils just enough moisture.
Was this the final farewell to summer? No. More likely a short pause, a small reminder of how quickly the weather can change here. For the island this means for now above all one thing: a little less heat, a little more breathing room — and in some villages a heartfelt “gràcies” to a rain cloud that arrived at just the right time.
