The coach is spending time on Mallorca's west coast – since buying a house in Sóller he feels at home here

On the quay of Port de Sóller, when the sun makes the plexiglass of the harbour bistros sparkle and the cry of the seagulls competes with the clatter of the rowing boats, a familiar guest has been seen these days: Thomas Tuchel. A photo circulating on social channels shows him standing in front of the car rental company Sixt's office – a perfectly ordinary moment in a harbour appreciated by locals and return visitors alike.

That Tuchel has a connection to the Serra de Tramuntana is no secret: in early 2025 he bought a villa in Sóller and has since been visiting the island regularly. For many residents this does not mean a spectacular change, rather a confirmation of what we've long known here: Mallorca attracts people who seek distance from the glare of the spotlight while still enjoying proximity to the sea.

Tuchel is named as one of the most prominent German coaches of his generation. Publicly known successes include winning the Champions League with Chelsea as well as further achievements at club level and with national teams. Since January 2025 he has held the position of head coach of the England national team. Such careers bring attention – in Port de Sóller, however, it blends into everyday life: fishermen mend nets on the pier, a bakery van drives along the promenade, and the next cortado is served at the cafés without fuss.

The presence of prominent guests is certainly noticeable for the town: restaurants fill up, boat rentals and small shops see increased activity. At the same time there is a flourishing respect for privacy: just as locals do their morning rounds, many visitors try to strike a balance between curiosity and restraint. This is a form of hospitality that characterizes Port de Sóller.

The scene in front of the Sixt office is unspectacular and yet typical: no crowds, no posing fans, just a man going about his way. Such moments show a side of Mallorca that often gets lost under package tourism — the island as a retreat for people seeking peace and everyday life. For the neighbourhood, it remains important that respect for privacy takes precedence; a photo may make headlines, but in everyday life politeness and mutual consideration count.

What remains for us as islanders and travelers? A little pride that Port de Sóller continues to be a place where international guests feel at home without the village losing its character. And a small, pragmatic tip: when you walk along the mole, enjoy the sea, the smell of fried fish and the conversations in several languages — but leave people who are simply on holiday in peace.

On a hot August day Port de Sóller looks as usual: the heat shimmers above the guitar strains of a street musician, a fisherman's dog dozes on the wooden planks, and everyday life goes on, with the special aftertaste that the island occasionally receives prominent visitors without making a fuss.
