Weeze is getting bigger – a good sign for Mallorca travelers
New arrivals terminal of around 4,900 square meters, completion planned for mid-2027
On a stuffy morning in Palma's arrival hall you can hear the familiar clack of suitcase wheels, announcements in Spanish and German, and the brief relief when the flight actually appears on the baggage belt on time. Many island visitors know the route via small German airports, including Weeze. For these passengers there is now news that should calm the travel-routine nerves a bit: Weeze is building a new arrivals terminal.
The project is located on a site of roughly 4,900 square meters. Planned is a ground-level passenger hall of about 3,900 square meters, which will include separate areas for Schengen and Non-Schengen arrivals. In addition there will be rental space for authorities, a hall for people picking up passengers and, above that, an office floor of around 1,200 square meters for the airport's central administration. Construction recently began, and completion is scheduled for mid-2027.
Why this matters for Mallorca: Weeze is a hub for many low-cost connections, especially for the airline that frequently serves the route. 2025 was a strong year with passenger numbers up 14 percent to around 2.2 million travelers; further increases are expected for 2026. A larger, clearer terminal can speed up processes, shorten waiting times and help make connections and baggage transfers more reliable – which affects the whole travel time for Mallorca visitors.
The separate arrival areas for Schengen and Non-Schengen passengers are not just a comfort feature. They make handling and customs and passport checks easier, which becomes noticeable during peak times: instead of longer lines in a mixed area, authorities and staff can work more specifically. For families, older travelers and people with tight connections, that means less stress.
From a local perspective: at Son Sant Joan you notice the connections to German regional airports in the early morning and late evening flights. Taxi drivers at Plaça d'Espanya and shuttle operators know the times by heart. A more compact terminal in Weeze can also lead to more stable arrival times, which in turn makes bus connections, car rental pickups and private transfers on Mallorca more predictable. For guests traveling from the Ruhr area or the Lower Rhine, the modernization could strengthen the argument for choosing Weeze as a convenient alternative to larger airports.
Practical tips from an observer's perspective: those who book flights via smaller airports should still follow the usual routines – allow enough time for arrival and check-in, use online check-in and keep passport documents handy for Non-Schengen destinations. For those who frequently travel between Mallorca and the mainland, it's worth looking at connections outside the main trunk routes: smaller airports gain reliability when the infrastructure is right.
The investment in Weeze provides a bit more planning security for travelers and everyone who works at the airport. A more modern terminal does not mean the charm of small airports disappears; rather the opposite: less crowding, clearer routes, less hectic activity at the baggage belt. And for us on the island that means a little less nervousness on the return trip and maybe more time for one last café on the Plaça before boarding.
Will the new hall make a difference? You will notice it in shorter queues, more satisfied passengers and in the livelier conversations in Palma's cafes about on-time flights instead of missed connections. This is a development we on Mallorca are happy to see.
