Access Road to Cala Mesquida Renovated: Safer Driving Over 4.25 Kilometers
The municipality of Capdepera has renovated the access road to Cala Mesquida. For around €364,440, asphalt, signage, roadside areas and acoustic elements were renewed — to the delight of residents and summer visitors.
Access to Cala Mesquida renovated: more space, less risk
4.25 kilometers and several measures for greater safety
If you drive the road to Cala Mesquida in the morning, you know the view: pines along the roadside, here and there an old natural stone wall, later the sound of the sea. This small access road in the northeast of the island has received a thorough refresh in recent weeks. The municipal administration of Capdepera has accepted the works on the approximately 4.25-kilometre stretch; the project cost €364,440 and was supported with EU funds. Similar recent investments include the Roadworks at Cala Llombards: Three kilometres, many improvements.
Technically, it was not about prestige but about everyday usability. The road previously had porous asphalt, and in some places the signs were heavily faded or damaged. That caused slow-moving traffic in the hot months and confused tourists navigating to the cove for the first time. Now the surface has been renewed, road markings refreshed and areas cleared so that plants no longer steadily reclaim the carriageway.
Residents of the small towns around Capdepera had long pushed for this. In addition to the asphalt, there were several measures: natural stone barriers along the shoulders to prevent vehicles from parking haphazardly and forcing pedestrians to dodge; clear, new signs; and acoustic elements that alert drivers to danger spots or speed changes. The latter produce a slight crunch under the tyres and remind drivers to slow down — a simple but effective trick.
The road ends at a roundabout that serves as a turnaround for many visitors. Especially in the high season it quickly becomes congested when cars park poorly at the edge or vehicles with trailers manoeuvre. The placement of smaller stones as parking obstacles is intended to ease exactly these bottlenecks and ensure continuous lanes.
Everyday life benefits immediately: cyclists now find more stable edges, residents can expect less dust and spray, and the bus line that runs seasonally to the cove now has a more reliable carriageway. On the short way to Cala Mesquida, you get a picture of how little effort can sometimes have a big effect — an increased sense of safety when getting in and out, fewer frantic evasive manoeuvres.
Such projects rely on maintenance after opening. Therefore it would be wise to maintain a fixed care plan now: regular trimming of vegetation, periodic checks of signage and a small annual inspection of the surface. Small checks prevent larger repairs later — and that saves public funds. This local approach is echoed by broader programmes such as Renovation in the Tramuntana: Six roads, five million — is that enough?.
For the municipality, completion does not mean the end but a new beginning: the chance to channel visitor flows more orderly and to relieve neighbours in the longer term. On a quiet winter morning, taking the freshly asphalted bend you may hear the sea and the birds — and think: sometimes that's enough to make the island a little more liveable.
Few interventions, more visible order, and a free side effect: the stretch looks tidier, and that has a reassuring echo for small businesses nearby. More traffic safety, less trouble on the roadside — that's news the people up here in the northeast will especially welcome with a smile.
