Eco Rally Mallorca-Inca Ciutat: Sustainability on Wheels
At the end of March, the sixth Eco Rally Mallorca-Inca Ciutat kicks off in Inca: more than 300 kilometres through the Tramuntana. Electric and hybrid cars are judged on consumption and consistency — including a spectacular night stage and a supporting programme for the whole island.
Eco Rally Mallorca-Inca Ciutat: Sustainability on Wheels
On 20 and 21 March, Inca will once again focus on quiet engines and smart driving techniques. The sixth edition of the Eco Rally Mallorca-Inca Ciutat covers more than 300 kilometres, more than half of which run along the winding, rugged sections of the Serra de Tramuntana. Inca serves as the centre: start, finish and the bustling activity between market stalls, cafés and the cloister of Santo Domingo, where the event was recently presented.
How does the Eco Rally work?
The concept is simple and demanding at the same time: production hybrid and electric cars compete in a test of efficiency. It is not top speed that matters, but consumption and consistency of driving behaviour at an average speed of around 50 km/h. The scoring takes into account how precisely the teams adhere to the required times and consumption profiles — a real exercise in anticipatory driving.
For spectators this means: no roaring engines, but technology you can get close to. The cars visibly drive like everyday vehicles along the island roads, and anyone strolling across the Plaça d’Espanya in Inca can experience a new side of mobility between the traditional scent of almonds and the quiet hum of modern drives.
Night stage and safety
One of the most distinctive elements is the night stage. Drivers and co-drivers are put to the test here: with reduced visibility they must deliver consistent performance, while the use of headlights and the associated energy balance becomes part of the strategy. Safety comes first: the organisers have chosen routes with good grip and safe passing points so that the sporting challenge does not come at the expense of road safety.
More than a race
The Eco Rally is part of the eMallorca Experience and brings, alongside the competition, a supporting programme with information stands, tech demos and short talks on clean mobility. For hobby drivers there is the parallel “Copa Inca Ciutat” — a more relaxed route that still competes on data-based driving efficiency. Local dignitaries, entrepreneurs and interested citizens mingle with the teams, making the event a meeting point for everyone who wants to learn about sustainable solutions in practice.
Why this is good for Mallorca
On an island that feels the effects of traffic acutely, making alternative drives visible is not just a trend but a practical step: dealers can showcase new models at Motorworld Mallorca: A new mobility experience center on the island, workshops learn about specific maintenance issues of modern vehicles, and tourists get to see a different mobility picture. In times of uncertain global supply chains and rising fuel prices, a race that minimises consumption acts almost like a small wake-up call for everyday life and politics.
If you walk through Inca on a Saturday evening during the event weekend, you will hear more conversations about battery ranges than usual — and that is no coincidence: the Eco Rally brings together topics that have long arrived in workshops, town halls and households.
Looking ahead
The sixth edition relies on continuity: proven test formats, high safety standards and a programme that brings together technology, sport and city life. For the island it is an invitation: try things out, listen and join the discussion. Those who are curious should check out the parking areas around Inca, experience the night stage or use the information stands or consult the Driving around Mallorca in an electric car: Map shows all charging stations — and how easy driving really is to take a closer look at e-mobility.
And who knows: perhaps the next conversation over a coffee at the Plaça d’Espanya will shift from range discussions to a debate about charging infrastructure — a small sign that such events can achieve more than just a trophy.
