Prison furlough on Mallorca ends in knife attack: man arrested in Algaida
During an altercation at a finca in Algaida, a homeless man was stabbed in the morning. The suspected perpetrator, currently serving a prison sentence in Madrid, was arrested by the Guardia Civil.
Incident in Algaida: prison furlough turns violent
It was one of those clear October mornings when the calm around a finca in Algaida was brutally broken on October 4 at around 9:30 a.m. According to investigators, a visit there ended with a stab wound to the abdomen: a man who is currently serving a long-term prison sentence in Madrid is suspected of having seriously injured an acquaintance, as reported by El permiso de libertad condicional en Mallorca termina en ataque con cuchillo: hombre detenido en Algaida.
How the encounter developed
According to reports, the accused had met the victim at the end of September in Palma in a fast-food restaurant. The two apparently spent several days together; the visitor, who says he had been homeless for about nine days, slept at times on the finca's sofa. The morning after an argument, the guest returned to the property and climbed over a fence to get back in.
Witnesses and investigations indicate that the homeowner told the man to grab his belongings within minutes. When the visitor took longer, the situation escalated. The injured man says he was woken from the bedroom and then stabbed in the right side of his abdomen. Afterwards the suspect reportedly offered to help — and at the same time the police were alerted.
Arrest and investigations
The Guardia Civil press releases indicate that the Algaida Criminal Police team took over the case and arrested the suspect at the scene. He was initially reported on suspicion of attempted murder. Police sources confirm that the arrested man is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence in Madrid — for a killing in Marratxí in 2008. Authorities are examining the exact circumstances of the prison furlough (official information on prison furloughs (permisos)).
The injured man demanded an ambulance services (112) after the incident; medical help was called. His condition was described as serious but not immediately life-threatening. Neighbors report hearing screams that morning; some saw police vehicles and officers securing the property.
Questions remain
What remains is a mix of anger, concern and many unanswered questions: Why was an inmate granted a furlough on the island even though he was convicted of serious violence? How did an unknown man climb into a private finca in the middle of the night? The Guardia Civil is now investigating all angles — motives, sequences of events and possible security gaps.
Locals speak quietly on site. "You don't expect something like this here," says a neighbor as the autumn sun shines over the olive trees. The file now goes to the judiciary, and the island awaits further answers.
