
Many conferences pull out: Hotel prices make Mallorca unattractive for business travel
Several larger companies have moved events off the island. Too-high room prices and the lack of availability for short stays are hitting the conference industry hard.
Last-minute cancellations of meetings due to high hotel costs
On Monday morning the Avinguda was stubbornly gray – a small mirror of what is currently happening in Palma's conference world: more and more companies are canceling events because of hotel prices or moving them back to the mainland. The reason: rising overnight rates and the limited availability of short-term bookings.
Several large German firms, including two well-known car manufacturers, have in recent weeks canceled planned meetings in Mallorca and are now organizing their conferences in Germany. This was reported by the Palma congress centre, which has been receiving inquiries for months that ultimately fail because of the price.
250 euros and up are not uncommon
Anyone looking for an off-season hotel in Palma for a short business trip is currently often paying €250 or more per night. For companies that need 100 or 200 rooms, that quickly adds up. At the same time, some properties have changed their policies: they are less willing to accept bookings for only two or three nights because longer stays are more economically attractive.
This affects not only the trade fair hotels near the port. Smaller establishments in Sóller or Cala Major also report that group bookings are thinning out – leaving the fiscal year for many hoteliers unpredictable and prompting hoteliers to expect further price increases.
What the island is trying
Tourism officials and the congress centre are now discussing measures: bundled prices for events, better offers for business guests and closer cooperation with airlines. Whether that will be enough is unclear. Many event planners say they need predictability and short-term flexibility at reasonable costs.
A colleague recently told me over coffee in Sa Llotja that he now knows of two inquiries per week that, for price reasons, are not taking place in Mallorca. That sounds like a trend that affects us all: hotels, caterers, taxi drivers – and Palma's city centre on otherwise quiet weekdays.
What this means for travelers and companies
For companies this means: book early, ask about package rates or consider alternative dates outside the high season. For the island it means finding a balance between tourist profit and attractiveness as a business destination amid the rising cost of living in Mallorca. In short: Mallorca must decide which type of visitors it wants to attract in the long term.
If you are now planning to organise a conference: obtain several quotes, ask about conditions for short stays and also compare mainland locations. Sometimes a flight is worth more than the difference – but you should calculate that in advance.
